Weddings on a budget

Your big day doesn't have to come with a big bill, experts say

Going into debt for a wedding is no way to start married life. Maxing out credit cards is a bad example to set for the teenager having a bar mitzvah, sweet 16 or quinceanera. And by the time 50th birthdays and golden anniversaries roll around, people know that friends and family matter more than price tags.

Besides, it's easy to have a big, beautiful bash on a budget. Here are eight tips.

What it takes to wed in bliss

FIJI'S tourism industry is gearing to benefit from a preference by tourists to tie the proverbial knot in Fiji.

Fiji Islands and Hotel Association president Dixon Seeto said they were aware that people from around the world wanted to get married in an exotic destination such as Fiji and that is why some resorts were concentrating on this niche.

Pacnews reported that many Australian couples opted for offshore marriage ceremonies, bringing a dozen or more relatives and other guests with them.

Costa RicaĆ¢€™s honeymoon season starts for 2008

Costa Rica has never been so popular and this is partly due to the fact that honeymooners typically look for much smaller intimate hotels when deciding on honeymoon destination’s. 80% of Costa Rica’s hotels have less than 40 rooms and there are some major hoenymoon hotes out there such as Punta Islita, rated the #2 hotel in all of Costa Rica by Conde Nast Magazine.  Hotel Gaia in Manuel Antonio also offers fine service in a tropical environment and places itself on par with the Four Seasons.  The normal honeymoon tour would be 3 days in Arenal at Lost Iguana or Arenal Kioro then 4 days at the beach.  Costa Rican Honeymoons offers a great selection of honeymoons to Costa Rica.

Changing wedding practices no longer follow tradition

This seems to be the wedding planning season, judging from all of the activities about the topic at this time of year: many newspapers have published either wedding supplements or special articles about the topic, stores are holding bridal shows, and there are wedding fairs where the bride-to-be can find help and advice about every last little detail. I tend to think about weddings at this time of year, too, even without that stimulus: our wedding anniversary is right about now, and besides we have just celebrated Valentine's Day.

FORT PIERCE â€" At 8 p.m. Feb. 14, 1992, Kevin Campbell gave Misty Carpenter a "promise ring;" and at 8 a.m. Thursday, Campbell kept that promise.

"We got together on Valentine's Day," Misty (Carpenter) Campbell said Thursday, "so we wanted to get married on Valentine's Day."

The new Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, 30 and 32, respectively, were among eight couples who tied the knot Thursday at the St. Lucie Clerk of Courts family relations office at the Orange Blossom Business Center on Okeechobee Road.

In fact, the Fort Pierce couple were waiting outside when the office opened Thursday; and they said "I do" in front of Cynthia Hamilton, the deputy clerk in charge of marriage licenses.

"We'd been planning a wedding for years," Misty Campbell said, "but then we decided, 'Let's just do it at the courthouse and be done with it.' "

By 10 a.m. Thursday, two weddings had been performed at the clerk's office; and toward the end of the afternoon, three couples were backed up waiting for services.

"Normally, we do maybe three or four weddings a day," Hamilton said. "Eight is about average for a Valentine's Day."

Hamilton is the wedding specialist; but all the deputy clerks in the office are authorized to perform the ceremonies, said Denise Katon, one of the clerks.

"It's a walk-in service," Katon said. "You don't have to have an appointment. You do have to have a marriage license in hand."

Florida law requires a three-day waiting period between the date a license is issued and a ceremony can be performed. Hamilton said five marriage licenses were issued Thursday.

Valentine's Day: Re-weddings make couples happy

Eleven1 couples took the plunge for the second time Thursday at the Marion-Grant County Senior Center. The wedding was complete with flowers, candles, a punch fountain, a three-tier cake and family, friends and other guests watching the loving couples tie the knot. The Rev. Jackie Michaelson married the couples, who stood face to face and repeated their vows to one another. Between the 11 couples, the pairs had been married a total of 335 years. Ken-neth Davis, 88, and his wife Marjorie Davis, 86, have been married longer than any of the other couples. “I’ve been married 66 years, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Kenneth Davis said. “I thought this (wedding) was beautiful. I don’t think I could do it again, though. I’ll be older next time.”
