Valentine's Day quite popular for weddings

FORT PIERCE â€" At 8 p.m. Feb. 14, 1992, Kevin Campbell gave Misty Carpenter a "promise ring;" and at 8 a.m. Thursday, Campbell kept that promise.

"We got together on Valentine's Day," Misty (Carpenter) Campbell said Thursday, "so we wanted to get married on Valentine's Day."

The new Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, 30 and 32, respectively, were among eight couples who tied the knot Thursday at the St. Lucie Clerk of Courts family relations office at the Orange Blossom Business Center on Okeechobee Road.

In fact, the Fort Pierce couple were waiting outside when the office opened Thursday; and they said "I do" in front of Cynthia Hamilton, the deputy clerk in charge of marriage licenses.

"We'd been planning a wedding for years," Misty Campbell said, "but then we decided, 'Let's just do it at the courthouse and be done with it.' "

By 10 a.m. Thursday, two weddings had been performed at the clerk's office; and toward the end of the afternoon, three couples were backed up waiting for services.

"Normally, we do maybe three or four weddings a day," Hamilton said. "Eight is about average for a Valentine's Day."

Hamilton is the wedding specialist; but all the deputy clerks in the office are authorized to perform the ceremonies, said Denise Katon, one of the clerks.

"It's a walk-in service," Katon said. "You don't have to have an appointment. You do have to have a marriage license in hand."

Florida law requires a three-day waiting period between the date a license is issued and a ceremony can be performed. Hamilton said five marriage licenses were issued Thursday.
